When To Start Toe Decreases Calculator

When to Start Toe Decreases on Knitted Socks With Pepper’s Magic Toe Calculator!

Heads up! This post contains affiliate links which means I get may get a commission if you purchase something based on my recommendations here.

The most common question I get asked about knitting cuff-down socks is: when do you start the toe decreases? And that’s not just from newbies – experienced sock knitters sometimes struggle with this too. Why? Because to get it right, you have to do some math, and that’s not everyone’s jam…

Lucky for you, math is totally my jam! So I built a nifty knitting calculator that determines how long the foot of a sock should be based on a person’s shoe size, and more importantly, it tells you exactly when to start the toe decreases for a perfect fit every time.

One of the most popular posts on this blog is a very mathy post on this topic called “How to Use a Sock Ruler,” so I figure there are a lot of knitters out there who might like to try Pepper’s Magic Toe Calculator, so I’m sharing that with you today!

How to Use Pepper’s Magic Toe Calculator

The calculator is a spreadsheet with one tab to work in inches and one tab if you prefer to work in centimeters. It has some U.S. Women’s and Men’s shoe sizes pre-programmed into it, but you can also customize it to work for any foot size. It’s designed to be used with a Sock Ruler, which is one of the most useful knitting tools I own, and you should definitely invest in one! That said, you can use a measuring tape if that’s all you have handy.

So, are you ready to level up your sock game?! You’ll need to have a Google account for this one because it’s built on Google Sheets. Once you have that set up, click here to make your own copy of the spreadsheet and then watch these video instructions.

Bonus Tip: The Easiest Way to Measure Your Gauge Swatch

BTW, did you notice my high-tech tip for measuring your row gauge at the start of the video? That tip probably deserves a whole video of its own, because it’s so freaking cool!

Here is a link to buy the EZ-PZ gauge ruler that I use in the video. Mine was a gift from my pal Jill and it’s probably the second most useful knitting tool I own. I misplaced it once and used this technique with one of the gauge rulers that has a 4’’ window cut out of it, and that worked too, but the EZ-PZ ruler is still my go-to.

How Long Should Your Sock Be Based on Your Shoe Size?

If you jump to mark 6:43 in the video, you’ll get instructions for using a bonus tab on the calculator that tells you how to determine how long your sock should be based on a measurement from a shoe-size chart. I often knit socks as gifts, and I never have folks handy to try them on for fit, so this is the equation that has worked best for me over the years. Hopefully it works for you too!
