Mini LYS Review: Weird Sisters Yarn Shop in Portland, Oregon

I just got back from my belated honeymoon in the Willamette Valley in Oregon and I had the pleasure of stumbling upon the best yarn store in Portland’s St. Johns neighborhood: Weird Sisters Yarn Shop. (I happened to be in the area playing mini golf across the street at Wonderwood Springs. You’ll want to check that out too!)

I was so impressed with Weird Sisters that I decided to write my first-ever Mini LYS review. (That’s “Local Yarn Shop” in knitter’s lingo). This is a combo independent bookstore and yarn shop, so that’s gonna sweeten the deal a bit for the bookworms out there. The bookstore part is called Two Rivers Bookstore. I didn’t check it out, but it was a great activity for my hubby to browse books while I shopped for yarn.

Weird Sisters has an awesome selection of sock yarn, which is my favorite vacation souvenir. I asked if they had any yarn from local dyers and they had a lot to choose from! Yay!

Teal Torch Knits Yarn

I got two yarns from a Portland dyer, Teal Torch Knits. I’m a sucker for speckled yarn and Calm Before the Storm caught my eye. But I was also totally mesmerized by this deep purple tonal called Infatuation…. so I got both! #yolo!

Hazel Knits Yarn

Hazel Knits is a Seattle dyer and I fell in love with the blue/purple tonal color. I plan to knit socks for my cousin with this one… but I also kind of want it for myself.. lol. We’ll see what happens!!

Ex Libris Fibers Yarn

Ex Libris Fibers isn’t local to PNW, but this colorway, Cauldron Bubble, is an exclusive for Weird Sisters, so I thought it would make a great souvenir. It’s a wool/silk blend instead of wool/nylon. The silk supposedly reinforces the fiber the same way as acrylic does, so I’m looking forward to testing that out.

Knitting Notions and More!

Weird Sisters also had tons of fun notions, stickers, and pins. I bought these Purl Strings cords that I’ve been meaning to try out – my pal Jill has some and loves them. I’ll include them in my recommended knitting supplies directory if they are any good. Stay tuned.

And now for some P.S. messages…

P.S. It’s not carried at Weird Sisters, but I can’t write a post about Pacific Northwest yarns without throwing in a word about Global Backyard! I’m in love with their tonal sock yarns!!

P.S.S. I also snagged some awesome local yarn at the Portland Saturday Market from Freya Gerke of Odd Fox & Fern. It is a beautiful red-orange DK wool dyed with madder root. It’s super pretty and Freya is good people. I had such a great time chatting about the natural dyes they use that I nearly walked off without paying!! Oops! Awkward!
