Knitted Purse

Gabis Echo Bag

Yay! I’m finished knitting this purse! Check out the finished project here – I even knitted a lining out of a pair of old pants to keep up with the sustainability theme with this recycled yarn.

Gabis Echo Bag Sustainable Knitting Project

WIP Notes

I was super excited when Knit Picks released a sustainably sourced Cotton yarn this summer and couldn’t wait to try it. Salvage comes in beautiful colors and is spun from up to 62-75% recycled fiber. It’s a light sport weight yarn with kind of a rustic texture. I’m not in the mood to knit a garment, and this didn’t feel like the right yarn to knit winter gear with, so I thought I’d knit up a small bag with it as a test run.

Pattern: Gabis Echo Bag by Katrin Kümmel

Yarn: Knit Picks Salvage in Rain Barrel and Reclaim

Materials:

  • I knitted the base on size 4 needles and I’m doing the rest on size 2.5 fixed circulars
  • I found this purse strap on sale on Amazon – hoping it will do the trick!
  • I used some old corduroys to line the purse and attached the strap with these D-rings.

Notes:

  • The pattern is an English translation from a German pattern and I’ve had trouble with some of the instructions. Looking at the picture has helped me navigate it – but I wouldn’t recommend this pattern to a beginner.
  • I’m like 90% sure that the colors are reversed in Chart A vs. the rest of the charts. In Chart A, I used the lighter yarn – Rain Barrel – for the white part of the chart and the darker Reclaim for the yellow parts. But, in the other charts, I’m using the darker yarn for the white sections (Reclaim), and the lighter yarn for the yellow sections (Rain Barrel). I like the way this is looking, so it works for me.
  • I suspect this yarn may not be a permanent line at Knit Picks, so if you want some, I’d snag it sooner rather than later!!

Heads up! I’m an affiliate of Knit Picks and Amazon, so I earn a commission if you shop using the links above. (It’s an awesome way to support this blog!)
