Stone Croft Shawl: Awesome Pattern for DK Wool

I fell in love with this gorgeous heathered orange DK Ultra Wool from Berroco and wanted to make a shawl out of it but it was hard to find a pretty shawl pattern for DK wool like this.  Luckily I happened upon Judy Marples’ Stone Croft Shawl via Ravelry’s advanced pattern search feature and I fell in love.

Stone Croft Shawl Knitting Pattern for DK Wool

This was easy to knit and would be a great beginner shawl pattern.  (Bonus: because it’s sport/DK weight yarn instead of fingering, it knits up fast!)  You start at a corner and work your way to the largest part of the shawl at the end, which is one of my favorite construction methods because you can decide how big you want it at the end instead of before you start. The decorative band looks vaguely like a cabled section when you are wearing the shawl, but it is actually just a simple lace pattern – no cabling required! Woo!

You can download this shawl pattern for $6 on Ravelry.  The designer also has a lot of other patterns for DK wool – I think the Brittany Coast Cowl might be up next for me!

FYI – I knitted this on wood circular needles because the wood grips the yarn a little tighter than the metal needles and when I’m working at a looser gauge with a heavy yarn, I like having that extra security to keep my stitches from accidentally sliding off the needles.  I wrote a whole blog post on wood vs. metal needles here if you are curious to learn more.
