A dear friend of mine gifted me a subscription to Darn Good Yarn’s Yarn of the Month Club and it’s just fabulous. Each month you get a box with 50 grams of one of their beautiful silk yarns, a booklet featuring how it was made, and plus a fun little goodie.
My second box contained a ball of their Fancy Twist yarn, which is a bulky weight, so 50 grams only added up to 50 yards, meaning I had to get a bit creative to make that yardage stretch as much as possible by pairing the colorful yarn with a solid yarn in this great slipped-stitch colorwork hat pattern.
I intended to make a pompom out of the Fancy Twist but the sample hat pictured on the pattern had one of these faux fur pompoms and it sort of struck my fancy, so I ordered one off Amazon. I was a little nervous because I’ve heard that these pompoms can vary widely in quality, but I lucked out with the seller I purchased from. It was a little smashed up because it came packaged up in a set of four, but all I had to do was hit it with a blow-dryer for a few seconds and it puffed right back up.
My one regret with this project is that I should have picked a black yarn that was better-suited for this project. I’ll admit, I was in a bit of a hurry to get started on it so I just added this yarn to my Amazon order because it was cheap and I could have it tomorrow, but it wasn’t really the right weight or the best texture for a hat. (It’s a super-bulky, which is why the hat is a little wide.)
