Just a quick post to show off some Simple Skyp socks on my needles. If you are thinking these look familiar, that’s because this is the third pair I have made out of the same yarn line, hahaha. Clearly I like it! The yarn is Knit Picks Stroll Tweed in Prussian Heather.
I really like this pattern for men’s socks for a few reasons. First, it’s a bit of a gender stereotype, but I just think the pattern looks more masculine than something lacy or really elaborate. Next, I make them with size 2 needles so they knit up slightly faster than socks on size 1 or 1.5. Since the foot on men’s socks is a bit longer, this makes a difference. Likewise, the ribbing on this pattern accommodates a wider foot and leg without having to cast on too many stitches. This pair is the larger size with a 72 stitch cast on, but I have made the 64 stitch version for men too.
Speaking of sizing, here is an action shot of my Sock Ruler, which is SO helpful when you are knitting socks for someone else. You can put it toward the back of the heel and then easily measure to see how long the foot is (I use this chart). I know from experience that my typical toe is 1.5 inches. Since this sock is a bit larger, I’ll plan for a 2” toe. If it’s slightly larger or smaller, I’m not going to lose too much sleep over it. Worst case scenario, I’d just unravel it and try again. Toes don’t take that long to knit. Note: there is a way to do the math to figure out exactly how long your toe will be, but I’m not going to go there in this post… but if you are curious, I’ll happily write another post about that.
