As I made it explicitly clear in these photos: knitting this afghan took forever! Well, actually it took five and a half years, but I love a good hyperbole! I started in in September of 2013 and finished in January, 2019. (Taking the photos and posting on this on the blog also took forever!) Of course, I wasn’t working on it constantly for five years – it went through periods of hibernation as my interest in the project waxed and waned. Now that it’s finished, I wish I had just buckled down and knit it much faster because I absolutely love it! It’s so pretty and quite warm. A perfect lap blanket.
I purchased this as a kit from Knit Picks that used their Brava Sport yarn (that’s a link to the pattern download and if you scroll to the bottom you can see the kit options). Brava is soft and warm and washable, so it’s a great choice for an afghan. However, I am pleased that Knit Picks is now offering this in Wool of the Andes as a yarn option, which is a fantastic yarn and that’s what I’d choose if I cast on for this today. (Yes, it’s more expensive, but considering how many hours I invested in knitting this, it is worth it to splurge on your favorite fiber!). I also love the new color options for the kits. The jewel collection is my favorite!
Here is a bird’s eye view of the blanket:

needles: size 6 (from my nickle plated interchangeable circs set)
gauge: ?
yarn used: a whopping 3,041 yards! The kit comes with one ball of each color (2 balls of the border color); that was enough for me for everything other than white and blue (sky) – I was like 10 yards short for each of those colors and had to order more.
finished size: mine is about 54” square
duration: September 2013 – January 2019
I actually found your website when googling about the Hue Shift Blanket. I’ve wanted to make one for a couple of years, but the KnitPicks yarn for the regular Rainbow kit is done.
This post convinced me the pastel rainbow kit is going to come out pretty, and encouraged me to buy it as a kit.
I think you’ll like the pastel one! I am currently knitted up the jewel tone one. Hopefully I can knit it faster than I did this one!
