I finished knitting a pair of socks recently that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about. They’re the Indivisible Socks by verybusymonkey, one of my all-time favorite indie pattern designers.

Verybusymonkey posts lots of photos of her beautiful sock and shawl designs on Instagram and occasionally announces sales in the captions. Pretty standard knitting content. Back in November 2024, she posted a totally normal photo of herself wearing an “I voted” sticker. No long caption, no manifesto, just a few pro-Harris hashtags. And somehow, that was enough to bring out the trolls. The idea that someone would try to intimidate or silence a person for so quietly participating in democracy is incredibly unsettling. It’s truly scary.

The Indivisible Socks were her response. This pattern isn’t just beautiful, it’s also a way to prevent this kind of intimidation because she’s giving a portion of the proceeds from all sales to pro-democracy organizations like Democracy Forward and the ACLU. Amazing!

I knitted this pair as a gift for my friend and mentor, Suzanne. She is one of those people who truly cannot be silenced. She has spent her career standing up for young people, for equity, and for the idea that our voices matter. These socks are a small but heartfelt tribute to that spirit. I know she’ll love them.

Knitting has always been more than just making things for me. It’s how I process the world, how I show I care, and, now, I suppose it’s also how I join others in taking a stand. These socks remind me why I love this craft and this community so much.
